Windshield Molding Clips: What They Do and How to Replace Them

Molding clips are the least glamorous parts in a restoration and one of the most common reasons a finished car looks almost right. They're the small stamped or plastic retainers that hold the bright trim around the windshield (and often the back glass) to the body. Get them wrong and the molding sits proud, rattles at highway speed, or pops loose the first time the car goes over a driveway apron.

This is a general technique guide. Clip design, count, and mounting method vary enormously between vehicles — some clips screw to the pinch weld, some snap into welded studs, some bolt through the body, and some are captured by the glass setting itself. Always follow the instructions that come with your specific kit and the requirements of whoever is setting your glass. Where a step depends on your particular car, we say so rather than guessing.

What the clips actually do

The bright molding around a windshield isn't structural — it covers the joint between glass, seal, and body, and it sheds water away from that joint. The clips are what hold it at the right height and the right distance from the glass. Because they live in a wet, dirty channel and are usually plated steel, they are one of the first things on a car to rust away. On a car that's been sitting, it's common to find half the original clips missing entirely and the molding held on by nothing but friction and hope.

Why kits are sold as complete sets

There's a practical reason for that: the clips all age at the same rate in the same channel, so if a few have failed the rest are usually close behind. Replacing a full set while the glass is out costs a fraction of pulling the glass again a year later.

Tools you'll want on hand

  • The correct clip kit for your exact year, body, and glass opening
  • A molding removal tool (the flat hooked type) or a plastic trim tool
  • Painter's tape to protect paint along the molding edge
  • A wire brush and rust converter or primer for the clip channel
  • A driver or socket set — only if your clips are screwed or bolted rather than snapped

1. Get the molding off without bending it

Tape the paint alongside the molding first. Most windshield moldings release by sliding a molding tool under the lip and unhooking each clip in sequence — work along the length, one clip at a time, rather than pulling on the middle of the molding. Bright trim is thin and once it's kinked, it's very hard to make it look right again. If a section won't release, stop and find the clip that's still holding rather than forcing it.

Whether the glass has to come out first depends entirely on your car — on some vehicles the molding is accessible with the glass in place, on others the clips are captured under the glass or the seal. Check your specific application before you start; this is not something to assume.

2. Clean and treat the channel

With the molding off, you'll usually find the clip channel is where the rust started. Wire-brush it back, treat or prime any surface rust, and let it cure fully before new clips go in. New clips on a rusty channel just start the same clock over. If you find rot through the metal rather than surface rust, that's bodywork to sort out before the glass goes back — a clip can't anchor to metal that isn't there.

3. Fit the new clips before the molding

Install all the clips first and confirm each one is seated and oriented the same way. Clip kits often contain more than one shape — corners, upper run, lower run — and they are not interchangeable. Lay the kit out against the opening and match each piece to its position before you commit anything.

If your clips fasten with screws or bolts, snug them evenly rather than fully torquing one before moving to the next; that keeps the line straight. We don't publish a torque figure here because it's fastener- and vehicle-specific — follow your kit's instructions.

4. Set the molding and check the line

Start the molding at one end and press it onto each clip in sequence, checking as you go that it's sitting at a consistent height relative to the glass. Sight down the length of the molding from a low angle — a clip that isn't fully engaged shows up as a dip long before it shows up as a rattle. Any section that won't seat is usually a clip that's slightly out of position, not a molding that's the wrong length.

Common mistakes

  • Reusing old clips "just for now." They're the cheapest part of the job and the only one that requires pulling everything apart again to fix.
  • Skipping the channel prep. New clips in a rusty channel fail early.
  • Mixing up clip positions. Corner clips in the straight run (or the reverse) leave the molding sitting wrong and can crack it.
  • Levering on the middle of the molding. One kink and it never looks right again.
  • Ordering by "looks the same." Clip kits are year- and body-specific — a 2-door hardtop kit and a 4-door sedan kit for the same car are often different parts.
