Beltline Molding, Door Seal, or Window Felt? How to Tell What's Actually Leaking

Somebody gets a wet floor, searches "door seal," buys a door seal, installs it, and still has a wet floor. It's one of the most common wasted purchases in this hobby, and it happens because three completely different parts seal one door opening, and they fail in three different ways.

Here's how to tell them apart, and how to work out which one you actually need before you spend anything.

The three parts

1. The beltline molding (also called outer belt weatherstrip, window sweep, or belt strip)

This is the strip that runs horizontally along the top edge of the door, right where the glass comes out of the door skin. There's an outer one you can see — usually chrome or black — and normally an inner one on the other side of the glass. Their job is to wipe the window glass as it goes up and down, and to stop water running down the outside of the glass from getting into the door cavity.

When it fails: water gets inside the door. Which is usually fine, because doors have drain holes — until the drains are plugged, at which point the door fills and eventually overflows into the car. The other tell is a wet or musty smell and rust starting at the bottom of the door skin.

2. The door window felt / run channel (fuzzies, glass run channel)

This is the fuzzy-lined U-shaped channel that runs up the front and back edges of the window opening and across the top of the door frame. It guides the glass and seals against its edges.

When it fails: wind noise at speed, glass that rattles or is slow and jerky going up, and water tracking down the leading edge of the glass. On a hardtop with no door frame, worn felt also lets the glass wander out of alignment with the roof rail seal.

3. The on-body door seal (weatherstrip, door rubber)

This is the big hollow bulb of rubber that runs all the way around the door opening — on the body on most vehicles, on the door itself on some. It's what the whole door presses against when it closes.

When it fails: water on the floor, at the base of the door opening. Wind roar from the whole door rather than just the glass. A door that shuts too easily or sounds hollow. Old bulb seals go hard and take a permanent set — if you can squash it flat with your fingers and it stays flat, it's done.

The five-minute diagnosis

  1. Where's the water? On the carpet at the door sill and rocker → suspect the on-body door seal. Inside the door skin, or seeping out the bottom of the door → suspect the beltline molding (and check your door drains). Running down the inside of the glass → suspect the window felt.
  2. The paper test. Close a strip of paper in the door and pull. Even, firm drag all the way around means the bulb seal is still doing its job. Any spot where the paper slides out free is a gap in the on-body seal.
  3. Squeeze the bulb. Good rubber springs back. If it stays compressed, it's lost its set and it will not seal no matter how well the door is adjusted.
  4. Look at the top of the glass with the window down. The beltline molding lip should be intact and flexible along its whole length, with the fuzzy or rubber wiping edge still present. Bare metal or a hardened, split lip means it's not wiping.
  5. Run the window up and down. Rattling, chattering, or a scraping sound points at the felt run channel, not the seals.
  6. Hose test, one zone at a time. Low-pressure garden hose, top of the glass only, then the door gap only, with someone inside watching with a flashlight. Don't pressure-wash — that will push water past a perfectly good seal and tell you nothing.

Kit or individual pieces?

You'll notice we list both. For a 1984-1996 Jeep Cherokee 4-door, for example, there's a complete beltline molding kit (SKU wfk 6120 84) and there are also the individual left, right and rear pieces listed separately (wfl 6120 84, wfr 6120 84, wfl 6121 84). Same story on most popular applications.

Buy the kit if the vehicle has been outside for years, if more than one strip is visibly bad, or if you're doing a proper restoration. They all aged in the same weather at the same rate — if one is gone, the others are close behind, and doing them together is one afternoon instead of four.

Buy the single piece if you have a genuinely isolated failure — a door that got hit, one strip damaged by a bad window regulator, a vehicle where the rest of the trim is demonstrably sound. There's no virtue in replacing good parts.

Two ordering details that cause most returns

Door count and cab style matter more than the year. A 2-door and a 4-door of the same year and model take different beltline kits — different lengths, different piece counts. Same with a regular cab, extended cab and crew cab pickup. Our titles state the door count and body style; read the full title, not just the year range.

Front kit vs. rear kit. On four-door vehicles the front and rear door strips are often sold as separate kits. If your listing says "front kit," it means front.

The order to do them in

If you're doing all three, do the window felt and run channel first — it usually requires the door panel and often the glass to come out, and you don't want to disturb a fresh beltline molding to get at it. Then the beltline molding, which typically goes on with the panel still off. Then the on-body door seal last, since it's independent of the door's internals and is the easiest to fit around everything else.

If you're only doing one, do whichever one your diagnosis pointed at. Guessing is how people end up with three parts and the same wet floor.
